De-Stressing Math Collective (DMC): From Variational Principles to Quantum Linear Solvers: An Application to Quantum Scattering
Join the De-Stressing Math Collective (DMC) for "From Variational Principles to Quantum Linear Solvers: An Application to Quantum Scattering." The speaker will be Ellie Park HC ’27. Snacks will be served in the Math Lounge (Park 360) at 6:30 PM.
Talk Abstract: How does a problem about colliding particles become a system of linear equations, and how might a quantum computer help solve it? This talk explores the mathematical connections behind my thesis on quantum algorithms for scattering calculations. Starting with the Kohn Variational Principle, I will show how a finite basis and a stationarity condition turn a differential equation into a matrix problem. I will then introduce quantum circuits as parameterized families of normalized vectors and explain how a variational quantum linear solver searches for a solution through optimization. Familiarity with linear algebra and basic calculus will be helpful, but no prior knowledge of quantum computing is assumed.
