Dr. Jama Shelton Presents 'Understanding the Impact of (trans)Gender Oppression'
Dr. Jama Shelton, associate professor at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College, presents "It's Bigger than Pronouns: Understanding the Roots & Impact of (trans)Gender Oppression."
Summary
The basic human rights of trans people and communities are under increased debate in the U.S. Within the first month of 2024, 416 bills limiting the ability of trans people to participate as full citizens have been introduced across 38 states. Gender-based oppression is not a new phenomenon; however, the legislative efforts to challenge their very existence is unprecedented.
This presentation will address the roots of trans oppression, connect trans oppression to other attempts to limit the bodily autonomy of minoritized groups in the U.S. and offer opportunities for supporting people of all genders to fully engage in public life and fulfill their innate human potential.

- Define cisnormativity and its connection to trans oppression
- Identify manifestations of cisnormativity in their practice/work and social settings
- Differentiate facts from myths related to trans oppression and gender equity
