Antiquities with no known find-spot can be found in public and private collections across the country. But attitudes towards undocumented antiquities are changing, and museums are increasingly proactive in addressing their legal and ethical liabilities. Provenance research is fundamental to such efforts, but unlike Nazi-era thefts, the infrastructure for research on antiquities is lacking. New initiatives across institutions and academic fields are creating opportunities for future professionals to undertake this work.
This session with Dr. Mireille Lee (PhD, BMC '99, MA '94) will introduce students to the field of provenance research. Dr. Lee founded the The Foundation for Ethical Stewardship of Cultural Heritage (FESCH) and its project the Mediterranean Antiquities Provenance Research Alliance (MAPRA) to provide training and resources for provenance research on undocumented antiquities. FESCH and MAPRA aim to facilitate restitutions, when warranted, and to promote bilateral agreements to allow antiquities to remain in US collections for study and research. MAPRA is currently funded by a Tier II grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) Division of Preservation and Access.
