In 1997-98, in a small lab space in Dalton, staff association member Ann Ogle created the end of year sale in order to reduce campus waste and create an income stream to support the activities of the Staff Association. It is an annual event that has grown to involve the cooperative efforts of Staff volunteers, Housekeeping, and Public Safety and many other community partners. The volunteer list to help the sale occur includes more than 60 people. Look for a separate post if you would like to sign up as a volunteer. The EOY sale has kept hundreds of thousands of pounds of belongings out of landfills and put them into the hands of community members who can use them. The revenue from the sale funds the Staff Association’s projects and initiatives for the following year.

We also identify and return items to campus partners (Dining Services, Wyndham, Center for Career and Civic Engagement, etc). At the conclusion of the sale, the Staff Association opens for a day to distribute sorted items to campus partners and to local organizations and community partners such as Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a praxis partner for Community and Civic Engagement; the Philadelphia Senior Adult Activity Centers (connection to AME church in North Philly and BMC staff; Mary Jane Home Enrichment Centre in Philadelphia (Community volunteer Edna Williams and BMC staff); the Refugee Resettlement Program at the Nationalities Service Center in Philadelphia; and several Philadelphia and other Public School teachers working in under resourced schools.

We are always trying to find more and better connections to local organizations that can use the items left at the end of the sale, before donations are sent to Helpsy or recycled with other organizations such as:

In the past the SAEC has also given donations to: • Vietnam Veterans Organization and Green Drop • Soles 4 Shoes: Wearing out Poverty (used shoes and boots, single shoes), • HEMP Legacy Foundation Bra Recycler (homeless women’s program that recycles bras and bra wires, partnership with Soma bras) • Jeans into Insulation (partnership with Madewell Jeans Recycling effort) • Textile Recycling (Lower Merion Township Public Works Complex) • ASPCA (blankets and towels that can’t be used by people) • Onesight.org (used glasses)
