Camp Pause

A 4-channel Video Installation by Dictaphone Group

September 12 - December 14, 2018

One of four interactive installations on campus this fall by the artist Tania El Khoury, an artist based in Beirut and London, Camp Pause (2016), is a four-channel video that follows Palestinian residents of the Rashidieh Refugee Camp in Lebanon on their everyday journeys between their homes and the nearby sea. The installation, made in collaboration with other members of Dictaphone Group, weaves together the stories of four refugees and their arrivals to the camp, their struggles to build, and their everyday lives in a camp bordered by the sea and a military checkpoint.

From September 12-23, Camp Pause joins three other works at Bryn Mawr for the most extensive exhibition of El Khoury's work to date. ear-whispered: Works by Tania El Khoury is a collaboration between Bryn Mawr College's Performing Arts Series, Special Collections, and Program in Middle Eastern Studies funded by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage with additional support from the Friends of the Bryn Mawr College Library. Read student blog posts about their experiences working with the artist. Performance tickets for Gardens Speak available here.

Camp Pause remains on view in the Rare Book Room for the entire fall semester and is accompanied by a series of related programming that explores themes of immigration, memory, story-telling, and social justice in the Middle East.

Major support for ear-whispered: works by Tania El Khoury has been provided to Bryn Mawr College by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage. This project is presented by Bryn Mawr College's Performing Arts Series in association with FringeArts.

“While the whole world is busy discussing what they call the ‘refugee crisis,’ we hope to remember the importance of listening to those who are really in that crisis. We also hope to remember that leaving people in limbo with few resources and rights is not a solution but an absence of one.”
