Study Abroad

Bryn Mawr College enables students to study at institutions in Russian-speaking countries through the College's cooperative agreement with American Councils (ACTR-ACCELS). "One of the oldest and most respected overseas Russian immersion programs available to students today, the Advanced Russian Language & Areas Studies Program (RLASP) is designed to improve participants' oral, listening, reading, and writing proficiency in the Russian language and to develop their knowledge of Russian history, politics, culture, and society. Program features include homestays, weekly excursions, travel to other regions of the host country, conversation partners, and a wide range of opportunities to pursue hobbies and personal interests in a Russian context. Program locations include Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir, and Almaty." *

The programs feature:

  • Summer, semester, and 10 month programs
  • Academic credit through Bryn Mawr College
  • Full-time U.S. resident directors at each institution who oversee academic and cultural programs and provide logistical support to participants
  • Core language courses focusing on grammar and lexical study, phonetics, contemporary Russian language, and the development of vocabulary and conversation skills
  • Lectures and seminars on literature, Russian and Soviet culture, history, politics, and contemporary mass media
  • Native Russian-speaking faculty with extensive experience teaching foreign students
  • Housing in university dormitories or with Russian families specially selected by American Councils full-time home-stay coordinators
  • Weekly cultural excursions and extended group travel outside the host city
  • Individual peer tutoring with students training to be teachers of Russian at host universities
  • Volunteer and internship opportunities
  • Opportunities to audit university classes and special programs for honors students
  • Graduate or undergraduate academic credit through Bryn Mawr College*
  • Pre-departure orientation programs in Washington, DC
  • Comprehensive accident and illness insurance

*Bryn Mawr College serves as the accrediting institution for these courses.
