Destressing Math Collective with Cavan Helmering
Cavan Helmering '25 will give a talk titled “ Market Economics Internship in Healthcare Obtained Through a Background in Mathematics.” Snacks start at 6:30 p.m. in the Math Lounge.
Abstract: The United States spends an exponentially larger amount on healthcare than other countries, and yet, it still has some of the worst health outcomes. Navvis Healthcare is a company focused on population health and value-based care. Rather than purely getting patients in and out the door, they have shifted the focus to looking at quality and the patient as a whole. Taken directly from their website, “Navvis is a Population Health, Value-Based Care Company… Working with health plans, health systems, and physician enterprises to build, operate, and manage new business models that accelerate and fundamentally change the way healthcare is delivered.” This internship applies mathematical learnings and the basis of rational thinking in a healthcare setting. While this is not a math filled experience, some of the learnings and various projects worked on will be explained to show other students just one of the opportunities made possible by obtaining a degree in mathematics.
