Endowed Faculty Lecture: Eugenics: How It All Started
Join us for the 2025-2026 Endowed Faculty Lecture Series! On Monday, March 2, Rudy Le Menthéour, Eunice Morgan Schenck 1907 Chair of French, Chair of French and Francophone Studies, and Co- Director of Health Studies, will present Eugenics: How It All Started. A reception will be held after the lecture in the Old Library London Room.
About the lecture: The usual narrative is that modern eugenics emerged with Galton’s coining of the neologism in 1883 and was made possible by previous developments in racial anthropology. Professor Le Menthéour will show that modern eugenics actually started a century earlier, in a different field (medicine), and in the context of the French Enlightenment.
