Are you interested in learning more about narrative medicine? Do you want to learn how to help empower kids with serious illnesses and complex health needs through collaborative songwriting? Do you want to take a closer look at some amazing lyrics written by a youth songwriter? Then join us for Bryn Mawr’s first Health Interest Programming of the year, "Hear Your Song: Examining Collaborative Songwriting Through the Lens of Narrative Medicine."

Dan Rubins, the executive director and co-founder of Hear Your Song, joins us to:

  • Discuss the goals and values of narrative medicine
  • Engage in narrative medicine practices through a close reading analysis of youth-written content from Hear Your Song's collaborative songwriting programming for kids with serious illnesses and complex health needs.
  • Share about opportunities to volunteer with Hear Your Song.

Hear Your Song is a nonprofit organization that empowers children and teens with serious illnesses and complex health needs to make their voices heard through collaborative songwriting. Since its COVID-catalyzed founding in March 2020, Hear Your Song has helped over 300 kids across 28 states and five countries to write songs about anything they want. Hear Your Song’s trauma-informed and kid-driven model means that the kids, as songwriters, take the reins of and have complete creative control over the entire process—whether it be a rock anthem about noodles or a power ballad about heartbreaking and healing, the choice is theirs! Hear Your Song Partners include Montefiore Medical Center, Newton Wellesley Children’s Hospital, as well as the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, the Serious Fun Network, Sickle Cell Society UK, and more.
