Germans in the World: Two Centuries of Capitalism and the Community in Brazil
Germans in the World: Two Centuries of Capitalism and Community in Brazil What sorts of communities did Germans create when the migrated to other continents? Using case studies from South America, this talk asks us to consider unfamiliar kinds of "settler colonialism" - from rural farmsteads to urban agglomerations. How did immigrantt entrepreneurs and major corporations turn São Paulo into the most intensive region of German investment in the world? Why did many German communities in Brazil embrace Nazism wholeheartedly, and how did expatriate culture turn in more harmless directions in the decades after 1945? The audience will be asked to reflect on the relationship between nationalism and capitalism in the Global South.
