Lisa Saltzman

Lisa Saltzman is the inaugural Emily Rauh Pulitzer ’55 Chair in Modern and Contemporary Art and serves as the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  A specialist in postwar and contemporary art, as well as the history and theory of photography, her work is animated by questions of history, memory and the ethics of representation.  Saltzman is the author of three monographs – Anselm Kiefer and Art after Auschwitz (1999); Making Memory Matter: Strategies of Remembrance in Contemporary Art (2006); Daguerreotypes: Fugitive Subjects, Contemporary Objects (2015) – and the co-editor, with Eric Rosenberg, of the volume Trauma and Visuality in Modernity (2006). 

She has contributed catalogue essays for exhibitions at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown; the Frist Center for Visual Art, Nashville; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Harvard University Art Museums, Cambridge, MA; the ICA, Philadelphia; the Jewish Museum, New York; the Jüdisches Museum, Frankfurt; and MOKAK (Museum of Contemporary Art, Krakow). 

In 2018, she served as the Starr Director of Research and Academic Program at the Clark Art Institute. Her work has been widely anthologized in volumes and collections dedicated to postwar and contemporary art and also translated into French, Spanish, German, Polish and Hungarian.  Educated at Princeton and Harvard, she has been awarded fellowships from the DAAD, the Mellon Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study, the Clark Art Institute and the Guggenheim Foundation.
