EPaDel Student Mathematical Papers Prize

EPaDel is the section of the Mathematical Association of America which covers Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. The following Bryn Mawr students are winners in the yearly Student Mathematical Papers Prize Competition.

The Charlotte Angas Scott Prize in Mathematics

The Charlotte Angas Scott Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to an undergraduate on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics. It was established in 1960 by an anonymous gift in memory of Charlotte Angas Scott, Professor of Mathematics from 1885 to 1924.

The Anna Pell Wheeler Prize in Mathematics

The Anna Pell Wheeler Prize in Mathematics is awarded annually to an undergraduate on the recommendation of the Department of Mathematics. It was established in 1960 by an anonymous gift in honor of Anna Pell Wheeler, Professor of Mathematics from 1918 until her death in 1966.

The Mary Louise Cookson Prize in Mathematics

The Mary Louise Cookson Prize in Mathematics was established in 2007. In honor of Mary Louise Cookson's extraordinary contributions to mathematics at Bryn Mawr College, a prize was established in her honor. Funds have been donated by Bryn Mawr alumnae, faculty, and staff. Each year a graduating mathematics major receives the Mary Louise Cookson Prize, in recognition of exceptional service that has contributed to the life of the department.

The Charles S. Hinchman Memorial Scholarship

The Charles S. Hinchman Memorial Scholarship was founded in the memory of the late Charles S. Hinchman of Philadelphia by a gift made by his family in 1921. It is awarded annually to a member of the junior class for work of special excellence in her major subject(s) and is held during the senior year.

The Elizabeth S. Shippen Scholarship in Foreign Language

The Elizabeth S. Shippen Scholarship in Foreign Language was founded in 1915 under the will of Elizabeth S. Shippen of Philadelphia.  It is awarded to a junior whose major is French, German, Greek, Italian, Latin, Russian, or Spanish for excellence in the study of foreign languages.

The Thomas Raeburn White Scholarships

The Thomas Raeburn White Scholarships were established by Amos and Dorothy Peaslee in honor of Thomas Raeburn White, Trustee of the College from 1907-1959.  The Scholarship program provides funding for summer language instruction, usually abroad.

The Bryn Mawr European Fellowship

The Bryn Mawr European Fellowship has been awarded each year since the first class graduated in 1889. It is given for merit to a member of the graduating class, to be applied toward the expense of one year's study at a university in the United States or abroad. The European Fellowship continues to be funded by a bequest from Elizabeth S. Shippen.

The Gertrude Slaughter Fellowship

The Gertrude Slaughter Fellowship was established in 1964 by a bequest of Gertrude Taylor Slaughter, Class of 1893. The fellowship is awarded to a member of the graduating class for excellence in scholarship to be used for a year's study in the United States or abroad.

Additional Awards, Scholarships, and Fellowships

The Clare Boothe Luce Scholarship Program for Mathematics Majors

The Clare Boothe Luce Scholarships were merit based and covered tuition, fees, room, and board for the junior and senior years for two math majors in the Class of 2009 and one math major in the Class of 2010. Moreover, there was one Clare Boothe Luce Scholarship to cover tuition, fees, room, and board for one semester of the senior year for a math major in the Class of 2011.

Selected scholars participated in a program of mentoring, leadership and outreach opportunities, and professional development activities. The scholars met with faculty to discuss numerous topics related to obtaining a PhD and career options with advanced degrees. The Clare Boothe Luce scholars participated in activities such as developing a series of talks targeted to undergraduate math majors and mentoring other students by serving as a Peer Led Instructor for a calculus course.

The Gail Ann Schweiter Prize

The Gail Ann Schweiter Prize Fund was established in 1993 in memory of Gail Ann Schweiter ’79 by her family. The prize is to be awarded to a science or Mathematics major in her junior or senior year who has shown excellence both in her major field and in musical performance.

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship

The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship is the centerpiece of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s initiatives to increase diversity in the faculty ranks of institutions of higher learning. Established in 1988, the fellowship works to achieve its mission by identifying and supporting students of great promise and helping them to become scholars of the highest distinction who will go on to transform the academy.
