Join the Data Science Program and Center for Visual Culture for a talk by Alberto Cairo, Knight Chair of Visual Journalism at the School of Communication of the University of Miami.
Alberto Cairo will present "Charts that Lie: What you design isn't what people see," about the modes of data visualization. Data visualization design is often taught as a series of "rules" that must be applied regardless of context, audience, or other factors. This talk takes a different—pragmatic, rather than idealistic—approach, explaining that a visualization is never good or bad per se, but better or worse depending on how well it achieves its intended purpose: if a visualization works, it's good, regardless of whether it conforms to inherited conventions or principles. Cairo is the author of three authoritative books about data visualization, How Charts Lie, The Truthful Art, and Functional Art.
