CARLA 3rd Annual Mini-Conference

Join CARLA over four sessions as we share on-campus anti-racist efforts across departmental, administrative, and student groups through presentations and discussions. Each day will have 2 sessions (1 - 2 p.m., 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.). RSVPs are encouraged, but not required.
Session 1: March 26th (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.) Community Foundations: Adding Strength, Insight, and Equity through Anti-Racism and Restorative Practice Description: Restorative Practice is a conflict mediation strategy that is rooted in global Indigenous teachings and anti-racism work to focus on equity, kindness, and community health. Participants will gain a deeper insight into how restorative practice differs from restorative justice, how these frameworks can be applied in various settings for conflict mediation and community building, and how these tie into using anti-racist work in our daily lives. Our session will also teach practical skills to actively use restorative practice and learn how to become more engaged with campus programming. Come learn about Bryn Mawr’s new Restorative Practice programming, how to get involved, and our hopes for our community! Presenters Courtney Newkirk, Restorative Practice and Student Support Coordinator and Honor Board Chair Rose Miller, Campus Safety and Student Support Liaison Dr. Tamarah Moss, Associate Professor of Social Work and Social Research.
Session 2: March 26th (2:05 to 3:05 p.m.) Designing Inclusive Field Experiences Description: Field experiences can be an invaluable experience for learning and career development. However, based on student feedback, they can also be places where students experience behaviors and situations that can be detrimental to their health, safety, and academic advancement. In this session, Pedro will present best practices, and participants will break out into small discussion groups to workshop how to tailor practices to build an inclusive Bryn Mawr learning experience in the field or in the classroom. Presenter Dr. Pedro Jose Marenco, Department of Geology
Session 3: March 27th (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.) Breaking Echo Chambers, Building Coalitions: Student-Led Israel-Palestine Dialogue in Atidna Description: Atidna’s student organizers will present how we facilitate dialogue to empower and educate. Atidna International, founded at UT Austin in 2022, is a student-led Israel-Palestine campus dialogue group. Our Bi-Co chapter, which we started last semester, holds intimate dialogue sessions where we grapple with diverging narratives, current events in Palestine and Israel, and what students can do to help make a better future. We have also raised over $1,700 for a grassroots peace organization and brought Palestinian and Israeli peace activists to campus. Presenters Nomi Falk, BMC ’27, president and co-founder Bi-Co Atidna Lori Ackerman ’27, co-founder and co-treasurer, Bi-Co Atidna Noah Rahimi, HC ’28, vice-president and Haverford co-head Bi-Co Atidna
Session 4: March 27th (2:05 to 3:05 p.m.) Using Wellness Tools to Develop and Support Anti-Racist Practice Description: Join OwlWell, Bryn Mawr's student wellness program, to discuss the role of health and wellness in our development as human beings and anti-racist practitioners. In this experiential program, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in activities used in our work and in student training to build an understanding of how wellness-based tools can be incorporated into antiracist action and community building on campus.
Presenters: Cristen Kennedy, Wellness Program Director & Erika D’Andrea, Wellness Program Coordinator (OwlWell)
