Application and Advising Support

Major Advisor Evaluation

Approval to study abroad is formally granted by the Study Abroad Committee. See the Eligibility Policy for more information.

The Major Advisor Evaluation Form is an important factor in the review of students' applications for College approval to study abroad. Before you complete this form, you and the student should discuss their study abroad plans in detail, including both program choice and semester of study, and departmental policies for counting courses from abroad towards the major.

(Please note: if a student is a double major, only one Major Advisor Evaluation is required. The form will be accessible via the Major 1 Work Plan.)

The evaluation forms for students applying to study abroad during the 27-28 Academic Year must be submitted the following dates, depending on the student's program of choice:

Approving Courses for the Major

Students may study abroad in the fall or spring term of junior year, or in some cases for both terms of junior year. It is critical, therefore, that their plans include a strategy for fulfilling major requirements. We encourage students who plan to study abroad to speak to their faculty advisors early in their Bryn Mawr careers about how best to schedule courses at Bryn Mawr to allow for a well-integrated semester or year abroad.

Students who wish to take courses abroad to count towards their major requirements need to have the specific courses approved by the major advisor in the students’ major department. This approval may take place either before or after the term abroad. Students should have a preliminary discussion before their semester abroad and the adviser should make a note in the student's online Major Work Plan of what courses taken abroad will count towards the major. Generally, one to two units, at the 200-level, count as electives within the major. Only courses approved by the major department can be counted toward the major.

Students planning to complete a minor should also consult faculty in that department to discuss whether any courses from abroad may count towards the minor, per departmental policies.

Students who wish to count courses from study abroad towards a major or minor should discuss departmental procedures for reviewing and approving courses with their faculty advisor. This may include whether the department will need to review course syllabi, coursework, final grades, etc. before and/or after the student's study abroad semester.

Recommendation Letters for Study Abroad

Study abroad programs often require one or two academic letters of reference. These typically must be from a member of the faculty who has taught the student. Some programs may also require a letter from someone who has worked closely with the student and can write a character reference. Host universities and other study abroad programs will want to know how long and in what capacity the recommender knows the student; details of the student’s academic performance; and personal strengths and/or weaknesses that affect the student’s academic performance.

In their letter, recommenders should:

  1. Discuss how the student’s proposed study abroad program aligns with their academic plans
  2. Comment on the student’s qualities, such as:
    •  approach to academic work
    •  intellectual curiosity
    •  time management skills
    •  any other helpful information

Some study abroad programs may have their own systems for electronic requests for letters of reference. Others may have separate paper forms that must be completed by the recommender, or the faculty member may be asked to email a letter directly to program staff. In all cases, it is the responsibility of the student to contact the recommender to request the reference and to provide instructions on where to submit the reference. Students are advised that they should inquire at least four weeks in advance about a recommender’s willingness to offer an evaluation/letter of support.
