Title IX

Title IX is a comprehensive federal civil rights law, signed by President Richard Nixon on June 23, 1972. Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex in any federally funded educational program or activity. Title IX says:

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

In its early years of existence, Title IX was most often known for creating equity in sports programs. Since then, institutions became aware of other forms of gender inequity, most notably instances of sexual misconduct. Sexual misconduct includes all forms of sexual harassment, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking.
