Abstract:
The 2024 film Anime galleggianti (Wandering Souls, 71 minutes) directed by Maria Giménez Cavallo reinterprets the stories of the most intriguing characters of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, reinvented through Sardinian tradition and culture. A hybrid experiment between reality and imagination, the film is the result of a close collaboration with artisans, musicians and local inhabitants. The metamorphoses culminate in the carnival ritual, symbolized by the island's archaic masks, neither human nor animal, but almost divine figures that visually transcend the boundaries of the natural world.

She later relocated from Paris to Rome, to work with Pietro Marcello, Alice Rohrwacher, and Francesco Munzi on the 16mm documentary Futura, and subsequently served as artistic director on Marcello’s L’Envol. In 2020, she founded her own production company, Anima Films, and directed several short films with the central theme of nature such as Jeanne, petite bergère, La grande quercia, and La visita. She has participated in international workshops including the Venice Biennale College, Locarno Spring Academy, and Armani Laboratorio. Her debut feature, Anime galleggianti—a reimagining of Ovid’s Metamorphoses—premiered at the "Alice nella città" section of the Rome Film Festival in 2024.
