Accessibility Series: Talking About Talking

Join us for a two-day celebration of stuttering and exploration of media representation of speech and communication disabilities and learn the skills to build a world where everyone has space to communicate.

About Geneviève Lamoureux

Headshot of Geneviève Lamoureux

Geneviève Lamoureux is a PhD candidate in speech-language therapy at Université de Montréal (Québec, Canada), where her research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). As a person who stutters, her work uses participatory action research with the stuttering community to reduce stigma and reshape how stuttering is represented in media, through the co-creation of training materials for media professionals. She also delivers workshops on ableism and stuttering (self-)stigma in Québec and internationally. As part of her doctoral work, she co-produced We Are the Audience with SPACE, a short film in which people who stutter gather to question how the world sees them, now making the festival circuit with selections at the Shiny Awards and the ReelAbilities Film Festival in New York. She is also the founder of Voice and Media, a research-creation initiative dedicated to creating spaces for dialogue on the representation of communication differences through festivals, films, and workshops. Its first festival edition was held in Montreal in 2025, with the participation of SPACE, CBC/Radio-Canada, and other organizations.

About Aidan Sank

Headshot of Aidan Sank

Aidan is the co-Founder and Executive Director of SPACE, a Canadian nonprofit creating a world that listens better to people who stutter, and everyone else. He has collaborated with the stuttering community as an ally for 15 years and worked in New York City for over a decade as a theater artist, filmmaker, and arts educator. A graduate of Circle in the Square Theater School, Aidan is particularly interested in the ways that dysfluent art can meaningfully shift culture. Aidan has co-curated dysfluent art exhibitions at the Whitney Museum (New York), Woodland Pattern (Wisconsin), and the Voice and Media Festival (Montreal). He also co-produced and co-wrote "We Are the Audience" with Gen Lamoureux, a short film on stuttering representation recently selected for the Shiny Awards and the ReelAbilities Film Festival in New York City. Aidan is grateful to the many people who stutter who have taught him how to truly listen and communicate. He lives in Vancouver, BC.

About SPACE

Aidan and Gen on stage

SPACE (Stuttering, People, Arts, Community, Education) is a Canadian disability nonprofit creating a more inclusive and accessible world for people who stutter. SPACE was founded on the belief that improving listening environments for people who stutter improves them for everyone. Through listening workshops, coalition building and systemic advocacy SPACE addresses the barriers that prevent people who stutter from participating fully in public life. We empower those who stutter through arts initiatives and community-led programming, providing vital resources and improved media representation. Our vision is a world where people who speak dysfluently can truly belong.
