Services and Fees

Counseling Services provides brief assessments, short-term counseling, psycho-educational groups and workshops, crisis intervention, case management, mediation, outreach, advocacy, psychiatric medication evaluation and management, and referral services for BMC students.

All Counseling services are free of charge!

Services

Monday–Friday 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. 

During these hours, students may be seen without an appointment on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students experiencing emergencies will be seen within the day, even if it is outside of these hours.

Please come in during triage hours if you want to establish care with Counseling Services for the first time this year. A counselor will meet with you briefly to assess your needs and work on a plan with you.

If a student believes they might benefit from an evaluation by a psychiatrist, they are encouraged to discuss this with their counselor, who may refer them to one of our psychiatrists or an off-campus provider depending on the needs of the student. If you are not currently seeing one of our counselors, please come in for a brief assessment. Students must be engaged in therapy to be considered for psychiatric services. 

In getting to know you, our psychiatrists will discuss the appropriateness of medications. Sometimes, students for whom psychiatric consultation is appropriate may have to be referred to an off-campus provider if the psychiatrists’ limited availability does not allow the student a timely consultation or if the student’s needs exceed the Counseling Service’s resources.

Our psychiatrists will consider prescribing stimulant medication in cases where the student can provide documentation from a recent neuropsychological evaluation confirming diagnosis and is currently stable and working with a therapist either at the Counseling Center or off-campus. Our psychiatrists only prescribe stimulant medications when these criteria have been met. In addition, those criteria are necessary, but not always sufficient and are left to the clinical judgment of the prescriber. If you are already receiving stimulant medications, we encourage you to try to continue to work with your current provider.

Student leaders may request to schedule a confidential student consult with a staff counselor for support handling any situations related to their DLT role.

TELUS Health Student Support Services is free to all currently enrolled students.

Healthiest You

If you have not opted out of the BMC insurance (UnitedHealthcare) you can login to the UHCSR portal (firststudent.com) to access free online counseling services through Healthiest You.

Note: When you sign up for Healthiest You, make sure you choose to sign up using your insurance UnitedHealthcare ID # so that your sessions are 100 percent covered! Even if you do not have the school insurance, telehealth services are available for a fee — go to firststudent.com.

Counselors are assigned according to availability. Students may request a particular counselor, but our ability to accommodate these requests will depend on scheduling.
