Located on the grounds of Haverford College, the Thorne Early Intervention Program offers an intensive and individualized experience for children as young as age 2.7 years. Classes with a high adult-to-child ratio are available to preschoolers for whom language delays, attention problems, social skills deficits, and difficulties with behavioral self-regulation preclude functioning in a traditional preschool setting. A major emphasis of the program is on fostering the children’s expression of communicative intent.
Students meet for two hours in the morning or afternoon, and attend for two, three, or five times weekly. Class sizes are limited and are taught by a speech-language pathologist and a special education teacher, along with assistance from undergraduate teaching assistants.

Susan Chaplick, M.S., CCC-SLP
Susan is a certified speech-language pathologist with 30 years of experience working with children. Along with her private practice, Susan is a member of the Professional Advisory Board for the Philadelphia Autism Society and was a member of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare’s Autism Assessment and Diagnosis Expert Work Group. In 2006 this group established consistent and practical standards for evaluation and diagnosis of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Susan earned an M.S in speech-language pathology from Boston University and a B.S in communication sciences and disorders from East Stroudsburg College.
Special Education Teacher
Prior to coming to Thorne in 2019, Nicole taught at A Step Up Academy, a school that serves children on the autism spectrum. Nicole earned an M.Ed. in special education from West Chester University and a B.S. in elementary education from Duquesne University.
