Academic Year Supports

STEMLA programming extends into the first two years of a Fellow’s experience at Bryn Mawr. In the fall of their first year, STEMLA Fellows will continue their exploration and preparation with the 0.5 credit course “Scientific Thinking.” This course establishes the principles of scientific thinking and works to help students develop their quantitative analysis skills. During subsequent semesters, STEMLA Fellows will continue working with their mentorship groups and be given ample opportunities for professional development, career exploration, community building, and mentorship in the STEM community at Bryn Mawr. STEMLA Fellows will also receive an annual scholarship that begins in the fall of their first year.

ST 2
The Scientific Thinking course covers, among other things, experimental design, data collection, and analysis. Here, Fellows were asked to drop meter sticks while their partners caught them. For the control group, Fellow caught meter sticks undistracted. For the experimental group, Fellows had to perform the same task while looking at their phones. The catching points for both groups were recorded and input into Excel, then graphed.
