Online Teaching Institute

Designed as a professional development Institute delivered entirely online, the Online Teaching Institute is a mostly asynchronous opportunity in which participants work together with support on the design of an online course. Throughout the Institute, faculty designing an online course for the first time have the opportunity to devise, create, and reflect on the different components of an online course. At the same time, faculty with more online teaching experience may work through the modules to further reflect on their existing online courses.

Although the last Online Teaching Institute of the summer took place July 13–16, 2020, you can still request access to the Moodle site to explore content and resources provided during the Institute. To request access to the Institute's Moodle site, please contact Maria Ocando Finol at mocandofin@brynmawr.edu. To request a consultation or appointment with the Education and Scholarly Technology team (EAST), please contact the Help Desk at help@brynmawr.edu

By the end of the Institute, faculty are able to:

  • Build and support a community of inquiry in an online course
  • Anticipate ways to efficiently manage student and instructor workload
  • Articulate learner-centered outcomes and objectives for an online course
  • Design effective online assessments aligned with course objectives
  • Plan, organize, and create at least one online lesson plan on Moodle
  • Identify which learning technology approach best fit course’s learning objectives

Structure

Following a virtual kick-off meeting, and for four days, faculty work through the Institute’s modules on their own time while participating as desired in collaborative online discussions to support their work. Participants also have the opportunity to meet with LITS consultants to support hands-on development of their online, hybrid, and blended courses. On the last day of the Institute, participants meet up virtually to share experiences, impressions, and next steps with their colleagues and to celebrate the course development work they've completed.

Collaborative online discussions and sessions generally include the following topics:

  • Accessibility and Assistive Technology
  • Building Community Online
  • Incorporating the library into your online or hybrid course
  • Moodle: From Zero to Hero
  • Online Language Teaching
  • Panopto Q&A
  • Zoom: From Zero to Hero

Faculty have reported approximately eight to ten hours over the course of the Institute to successfully complete the modules that support hands-on development of online course components.

Facilitators

The Online Teaching Institute team is composed of Chris Boyland, Tamarah Moss, Maria Ocando Finol, Alex Pfundt, and Gina Siesing. All members of the team bring significant experience designing online learning experiences.
