General Kitchen Worker

Bryn Mawr College has an opening for a General Kitchen Worker.

POSTION OBJECTIVE: Performs a variety of duties associated with the preparation and service of meals and special events within a specific dining hall. Assists in general cleaning of the dining hall.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares box / bulk meals, catering trays, bake desserts from mixes, deli line, garlic bread, sets up beverage station
  • Sets up and breaks down steam tables before and at the end of meals.                                                                                                        
  • Oversees front of house
  • Serves meals to customers (students, faculty, staff and guests):
    • ensures proper portion size
    • notifies cook of refill needs
    • grills or deep fries foods
    • refills items as needed
    • cleans spills, maintains a neat and visually pleasing line
    • sweeps and mops as needed
    • cleans slicer and mixer when used
    • steams
    • bakes
  • Assists in food preparation for meals:
    • slices meat and cheese
    • prepares salads for the salad bar/deli bar
    • prepares dessert and fruits
    • cleans work area and special equipment
  • Checks customers as they enter dining hall:
    • checks for meal ticket
    • acts as cashier for paying customers
    • ensures only “paid” or board plan customers enter the dining hall
  • Washes tables and cleans dining room as directed.
  • Temperature logs
  • Produce sheets
  • Maintains cleanliness of reach in and ensures products are kept at 40 degrees or below
  • Cleans kitchen equipment used
  • Adheres to standards outlined by sanitation program (ServSafe), and local, state and federal guidelines 
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned or directed.
  • Works with and assists in training of student staff to ensure proper setup and breakdown procedures are followed

SCOPE AND COMPLEXITY:

  • Follows established work routines; periodic checks for performance; questions non-standard conditions.
  • Work is subject to a general review by supervisor.
  • Errors result primarily in a loss of time; when in the position of checker or server, errors may result in a loss of money.
  • Internal contact with other members of the dining unit involving routine reporting or exchange of information. At times a general kitchen employee may have contact with students, faculty and staff and their guests which may require tact and diplomacy.
  • May have responsibility for a cash box with a limited cash bank. Collects meal vouchers and meal tickets.
  • Work performed in food service environment; occasional physical effort involving lifting of heavy weights, stooping or standing for long periods of time.
  • Work assignments received from Cook or member of managerial staff. Instructions are generally in an oral form but may be in written form on production sheets.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated ability to follow written instructions (menu/production sheets) and perform simple arithmetic.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to perform tasks such as handling tools, equipment, or materials.
  • Ability to perform tasks that may involve lifting items weighing 50+ pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • Skilled at effective communication (oral/verbal) and active listening skills.
  • Must be mobile between work stations and numerous campus buildings.
  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures.
  • Ability to bend over / lift up and down climbing stairs.
  • Working knowledge of safety precautions associated with the food service industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize dining service equipment such as slicer, deep fryer, grill, steamer.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience in dining service preferred.
  • Prior cashier experience.
  • Must be available to work catered events and special functions.
  • Is considered essential staff and must work during declared bad weather days.
