Guidelines for Requests for Tenure Track and Continuing Non-Tenure Track Positions for 2018-2019 (May 18, 2018)
Departments or programs that would like to request a tenure-track or continuing non-tenure track position are required to send a 1-2 page letter of intent that briefly outlines the position to be proposed, and then a full proposal by the end of the first semester. The letter of intent must be sent to CAP in electronic format by Wednesday, September 12, 2018.
Please see the schedule below to determine the deadline for submission of the full proposal. Proposals should not exceed 12 pages, using the template located below, and they should be submitted in electronic format to the Committee on Academic Priorities, via Linda Butler Livesay – email@example.com.
The schedule for submitting a position proposal is as follows:
- Department/program submits a 1-2 page letter of intent that includes the following:
- a brief statement of the reason/need for the position
- a statement of how the proposed position addresses the College’s mission and Strategic Directions
- a description of how the proposed position could be relevant to other departments, programs or individuals at the College
- a reflection on your department’s/program’s most recent (within the last 5 years) proposal to CAP and CAP’s response to your proposal at that time
- whether your department/program would like a listening meeting with CAP in the fall. Listening meetings provide opportunities for the Department/Program to elaborate on their letter of intent and to hear initial questions from CAP and CC.
- Position request letters of intent will be posted to the CAP web site.
- CAP chair sends message to all faculty inviting everyone to look at these proposals and contact CAP if they feel that they might want to be part of conceptualizing/developing the proposal.
- The proposing department/program directly communicates with other departments, programs, and individuals identified in the letter of intent as those that might play a role in conceptualizing the position.
September 13 until Fall Break:
- Requested listening meetings take place; these meetings will include two members of CAP and a member from the Curriculum Committee;
- CAP encourages proposing department/program to link up with other departments, programs, and individuals who should be or want to be part of conceptualizing the position (all conversations between departments regarding the proposed position should be documented).
- Full proposals due to CAP (using template and submitted electronically)
- CAP, in consultation with CC, develops a list of questions/foci for a department’s/program’s formal meeting with CAP
- CAP conducts a formal meeting with each department/program
CAP will examine each position request in terms of:
- its relation to the College’s mission and Strategic Directions;
- its contributions to short- and long-term departmental, disciplinary, and interdisciplinary directions;
- its impact on overall faculty resources at Bryn Mawr and in the Bi-Co, including our capacity to respond to sabbatical leaves;
- opportunities to enhance the diversity of our faculty;
- the history of previous requests from this department or program to CAP;
- in the case of CNTT requests, the established guidelines on the nature of CNTT appointments (see Attachment).
A proposal for a tenure track or continuing non-tenure track position must use the template outlined here (electronic document located below) and must include the following:
Departments or programs requesting a tenure track or continuing non-tenure track position must submit a completed proposal by the date set by CAP approximately six weeks after your listening meeting (in electronic format to CAP via Linda Butler Livesay – firstname.lastname@example.org). The final proposal should be no longer than 12 pages, excluding letters of support and tables related to staffing and the 5-year plan. Proposals must include:
- A detailed description of the proposed position.
- A statement of how the position would contribute to short- and long-term departmental needs and disciplinary directions as well as to the College’s mission, academic priorities (e.g., contribution to interdisciplinary programs, Emily Balch Seminars, postbac or graduate programs, Praxis program, etc.), and strategic directions.
- A description of how the position would contribute to the offerings, curricular demands, and the long-range goals and plans of other departments and programs.
- A long-range (5-year) staffing plan that addresses how the Department’s curriculum and its contributions to other programs will be covered.
- Student enrollment figures for the past five academic years. (Note: student enrollment should be broken down by introductory and advanced courses; include numbers of majors and, for departments with graduate programs, numbers of graduate students. This should also include some analysis of trends in the data. The Registrar should be able to provide raw data, which can be included in your request).
- A reflection on how the position could improve Bi-College curricular cooperation. Please include, if appropriate, letters from counterpart departments or programs at Haverford commenting on the proposal.
In addition, please include:
- A description of the applicant pool for the proposed position. It is particularly important to include specific information on the potential candidate pool from underrepresented groups within the professional discipline(s) being recruited and the specific area(s) being proposed. All requests must identify how the position has been defined so as to attract candidates from underrepresented groups. Please include relevant demographic data from all relevant professional educational associations, e.g., Mellon Mays Fellowship Program, Consortium for Faculty Diversity in Liberal Arts Colleges, etc.
- An estimate of the costs associated with the position, e.g., laboratory construction or renovation and startup funds.
Attach all letters of support from outside departments or programs to this proposal. These letters should specify the kinds of courses that the proposed position could contribute to the major or minor in those outside fields and should indicate in what ways departments or programs that write letters of support will sustain engagement with the process, if a search is authorized (e.g., attending candidate talks and/or meeting with candidates).
